The borough of Idanha has Nova counts 17
villages and has a very wide territory which makes it the
second largest borough of Portugal.
Its historical
origins are not really known, but it is thought that the
construction of the castle, in 1187, by Gualdim Paes,
Master of the temple, involved its urban development.
In 1206, D. Sancho I, allotted the title of city to Idanha
a Nova and named it like that o distinguish it from
Idanha-a-Velha (Idanha the old). The administration of the
city was entrusted to the knights of the temple.
Thanks to its fertile countryside it was famous and
attracted many farmers who could make there grow various
species like tobacco, tomatoes, corn…
In addition, an aspect which does not
pass unperceived is that the traditional city and the
modern city cohabit perfectly in Idanha-have-Nova.
From the Matriz
church, the palace of Palmeiras, the church of the Mercy,
the white and gold painted houses, to the modern Raiano
Arts centre, the public library, the superior school of
management, the swimming pools, the medical center... the
city fathers a very rich ensemble.
Every second Sunday after Easter, we
celebrate Senhora C Almortão with all the population of the
borough and the surrounding. It is a festival not to be
missed if one passes close to Idanha has Nova at this
period.
