Situated in the center of Jaen
Province, to the west of the forested mountains of Cazorla,
Segura and Las villas and bordering the banks of
Guadalquivir River, rises the ridgeway of Ubeda. this
fertile hills rise to a height of 1000m above the sea level
and within the gentle sloping countryside nestles the city
of Ubeda.
Ubeda is considered to be one of the finest examples of a
Renaisance city in Europe, proudly exhibiting palaces and
towers, testament to a past age of cultural and noble
splendour. This city is worthy of high praise. Described
and acclaimed by its visitors as an astounding Moorish,
hidden jewel, without a doubt, Ubeda will delight the most
demanding visitor with its architectural heritage.
The writer and literary critic, Eurgenio D'ors, after
visiting Ubeda, compared the city to the italian cities of
Farrara or Brescia. Given the beautiful urban plan found in
Ubeda's historic centre, we can hardly be surprised by
those comparisons.
The number of palaces, reflecting the economic and
political power of Ubeda nobility in bygone times is
astounding.
Albeit the notable Renaissance architectural style, which
elevates Ubeda to such a refined degree, the city exibits
many other urban styles worthy of atention. The Mudejar,
Gothic and Barroque architecture contribute to enrich the
monumental heritage marking the diverse cultural
civilisation which have left their mark on the city's urban
plan.
This diverse integration of styles unifies streets, plazas
and districts into a harmonious piece of urban planning.
The city exhibits surprises from every angle: within the
historic center, architectural masterpieces, anecdotes and
legends can be discovered by its curious visitors.
Ubeda offers as well an intimate and profoundly Andalucian
atmosphere. Its traditional fiestas, ancient crafts, rich
gastronomy, and idiosyncratic people confirm its andalucian
lineage which has always been the hallmark of the
city.
