NEXT STEPS FOR 2009:

- Reprogramming of Cities of the Oral Tradition, to be held on November 2009, in Idanha-a-Nova and Mértola;
- Proposal for the realization of two Congresses of the Oral Tradition in Ourense 2010 and Évora in 2011

• Music Festival of the Three Cultures (Festival of Ancient and Renaissance Music) to be held in Birgu from 9 to 11 October 2009.

• Circuits of Ancient Renaissance Music to be held in Sliven (from 19 to 21 October 2009), Évora, Idanha-a-Nova, Mértola (during December 2009)

• Meeting Network of the Cities of the Oral Tradition, in Idanha-a-Nova, Mértola, ont 21 and 22 November 2009, with the participation of all partners.
Meeting of the Oral Tradition will have several actions:
- Workshops;
- Storytellers (folk tales);
- Performances of theater / puppeteering / music;
- Thematic Workshops



DESCRIPTION OF ACTIONS TAKEN:


First Meeting, in Évora on the 28 and 29 November 2008, with all project partners: Arles (France), Birgu, Idanha-a-Nova, Mérola, Ourense, Ravenna and Sliven.
First contact between partners. Presentation of partner cities and their proposals. Presentation of the Oralities Project. Objectives, activities and funding.

Second Meeting, in Sliven from 12 to 15 February 2009, with all project partners: Arles, Birgu, Évora, Idanha-a-Nova, Mértola, Ourense, Ravenna and Sliven.

Presentation and discussion of the proposed budget. Physical programme for 2009. Promotional materials and communication plan.
The partneship with the association "les suds" in Arles is discussed. With the majority of partners, it was decided the impossibility of the continuation of Arles in the project.

• First Circuit of Early and Renaissance Music – Ourense (Galicia, Spain)

These circuits are musical gatherings where artistic and musical languages of different partners are shared. Promotion of Ancient and Renaissance Music from Southern European and Mediterranean Tradition, of Christian, Jewish and Arabic inspiration.

Each circuit involves only four cities - the host city and three other partner cities. In the year 2009 all cities will have a circuit, except Birgu which will be hosting a Festival of Early and Renaissance Music.

The First Circuit of Ancient Music took place in the city of Ourense, from 3 to 6 April 2009. Participating cities: Birgu, Sliven, Ravenna and Ourense. Performances were held at the Santa Eufémia Church.

Participating groups: Chorus of Mixed Voices Hakzhi Dimitar (Sliven), Fiona Cauchi and pianist Kris Spiteri (Birgu), Polyphonic Association of Ravenna (Ravenna) and Resonet group (Ourense).

The circuit had a welcoming session that was attended by delegations of these municipalities.

• Circuit of Early and Renaissance Music – Ravenna (Italy)

On the 24, 25 and 26 July a Circuit of Ancient and Renaissance Music was held in the city of Ravenna. Performances took place in Spazio Europa, at the Piazza San Francesco, located in front of the Basilica. The following groups participated: 24 July - Day Jackson's Pipe Band (Birgu); July 25 - Quartet Intermezzo (Évora); July 26 - Resonet (Ourense).

• First Circuit of Traditional and Popular Music – Ourense (Galicia, Spain)

These circuits are musical gatherings where artistic and musical languages of different partners are shared. Shaping and stimulating the emergence of new sonorities within tradition that may bring about other ways of creating new groups and a greater exchange in this field.

In this case, circuits Traditional Music. Each circuit involves only four cities - the host city and three other partner cities. In the year 2009 all cities will have a circuit, except the three Portuguese cities that organized a Festival of Traditional Music.

The first Circuit of Traditional Popular Music took place in Ourense on the 2 and 3 May 09 and incorporated the traditional “Festa dos Maios”. Square Bispo Cesareo welcomed the various activities.

Participating groups: May 2 - Voices of the Imaginary (Évora), Saca Sons (Idanha-a-Nova); May 3 - AOFT Gomes Mouro (Ourense).

• Circuit of Traditional and Popular Music – Birgu (Malta)

On May 9, 2009 the city of Birgu held the Circuit of Traditional Music and Popular Music, with the participation of the Group of Portuguese Music Roda Pé (Évora); Os Alentejanos (Mértola), Klez (Ravenna) and Ruth Sammut Casingena (Birgu).

• Circuit of Traditional and Popular Music – Sliven (Bulgaria)

On 18 and 19 May 2009 the Traditional and Popular Music took place in the city of Sliven, with the participation of The Mazurka Band (Évora); Saca Sons (Idanha-a-Nova), a group of Ravenna and a group of Sliven.

• Circuit of Traditional and Popular Music – Ravenna (Italy)

The Circuit of Traditional and Popular Music was held on 5, 6 and 7 June in Ravenna, within the Festival delle Culture. Participating groups: Uxu Kalhus (Évora); Folklore Song and Dance Ensemble (Sliven); Association Ourensá of Traditional Folklore (Ourense) and a group from Ravenna.

• European Music Festival of the South – Évora, Mértola and Idanha-a-Nova (Portugal)

In addition to music circuits, the Oralities Project promotes the annual European Music Festival of the South (traditional music festival) which seeks to be an initiative with large scale impact and with a greater diversity of groups and participants. All partner cities participate in this Festival.

The First European Music Festival of the South was held in Évora, Mértola and Idanha-a-Nova on the 10, 11 and 12 June with the participation of groups from all partners.

In Évora, the three evenings of performance took place at the Square of Giraldo, on an open air stage. In Mértola the festival took place in two different locations: the Castle of Mértola and the River Beach Amphitheater of the São Domingos Mine. Idanha-a-Nova performances were held at the Raiano Cultural Center, indoors and outdoors.

The festival involved 10 groups of traditional music and three Philharmonic Bands. Group Coanhadeira (Ourense); Folklore Song and Dance Ensemble (Sliven); Società Canterini di Ravenna - Choral Group "Pratella Martuzzo" (Ravenna); Ruth Sammut Casingena (Birgu), Alma Plana (Évora), Os Tocadores (Mértola); Sons do Vagar (Évora); Saca Sons (Idanha-a-Nova); Cordas Soltas (Évora) and Modas e Adufes (Idanha-a-Nova).

The Philharmonic Bands participated only in the Festival of Évora, the traditional music groups have built on a rotational basis, the festivals of Évora, Mértola and Idanha-a-Nova.

In Évora the Festival stated with the sound of three local philharmonic bands. The philharmonic bands began their performance with a parade at the Square of Giraldo and ended in front of the main stage. The following groups participated: The Philharmonic Band of the House of the People of Our Lady of Machede, the Band of the Philharmonic 24ht June and the Philharmonic Band of the Union and Recreation Azarujense.
